Mission Statement of The Beacon

The mission of The Beacon is to publish a newspaper that provides the Palmer community with information, entertainment and a forum for the discussion of issues that affect the community. The Beacon is a medium for the thoughts, beliefs and concerns of students to be expressed to peers and other members of the Palmer community. The Beacon values free press and is committed to…

  1. To provide an opportunity for the public to address the Palmer community;
  2. The Beacon is an open forum for all students and members of the Palmer College of Chiropractic community. The Beacon is a monthly publication which chronicles and comments upon happenings at the college and the larger chiropractic community, as well as current issues and areas of interest in chiropractic.
  3. While The Beacon is associated with Palmer College of Chiropractic, our mission does not necessarily match that of the College.
  4. The Beacon does, in a general sense, purport to sustain the chiropractic profession. In practice, however, it is noted that there is such a wide divergence in relation to the definition of chiropractic that it is seemingly impossible to appease all individuals simultaneously.
  5. The Beacon’s purpose is threefold: serve as a news source, create a platform for discourse and provide skill development opportunity for staff. The Beacon strives to cover and explain the relevance of issues that impact the Palmer community, primarily students, by providing a broad scope of perspectives.
  6. The Beacon is the official student newspaper of Palmer College of Chiropractic. The Beacon was founded by students and is completely student-run. All editorial and business decisions are made by the editorial board. The Beacon is published monthly (except July) and varies from 32 to 64 pages, depending on the amount of news and advertising each month. The average issue has 40 pages. The Beacon primarily covers news and events on the Palmer campus, but also regularly reports on events of interest to the Palmer community and to the general chiropractic community.
  7. The journalistic standards we strive to follow include: the publication of news, features and sports stories that are accurate and balanced; photos of good reproductive quality; commentary that backs up its assertions; and cartoons that make points that could be seen as “negative” or “positive” and are thought-provoking but not patently offensive in that they could be perceived as blatantly racist, ageist or sexist.
  8. The content of The Beacon is completely dependent upon submissions made by individuals and/or organizations.
  9. While The Beacon will make every effort to print only factual and true information, we do not have the manpower to verify the details of every submitted article. If an error is made on our part, we will attempt to correct it; if an author makes an incorrect statement, we would encourage the contesting party to submit a letter to the editor.
  10. The opinions expressed in articles are the opinions of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of Palmer College of Chiropractic or The Beacon.
  11. Submissions for publication will be considered in the following order:
    • Palmer student submissions;
    • Palmer staff, faculty and administration submissions;
    • Palmer alumni;
    • Chiropractic community;
    • General public.
